I Strange Brew started out as a recurring sketch on "SCTV", "Great White North." This led to an album and a "hit single" (heard in the episode). So, in fact, the phrase dates back at least to the SCTV days. Of course, "Take off" is a euphemism for something else... :)

It's too bad the show has been chopped up beyond recognition for syndication, and shown in random order. But, if you can, try and find the Great White North album. :)

Going off on a tangent... the Comedy Network in this country has started running The David Steinberg Show, which ran for about a year, just before SCTV started, and has many of the same cast members! (John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Dave Thomas) What's more, they're not even credited in the opening titles, but Bill "Ray-Jay Johnson" Saluga is!

neither. The terms were invented by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas for their Bob & Doug McKenzie characters in _SCTV_'s "Great White North" sketches. When _SCTV_ was originally aired in Canada, the CBC insisted that the show have some sort of "unique Canadian content" (to meet CRTC rules), Moranis and Thomas quickly came up with the two-minute sketches in which the two oafish brothers would act like an amalgamation of Canadian stereotypes (touques, flannel jackets, guzzling beer and eating back bacon) with some invented stuff thrown in. Naturally, when NBC began running _SCTV_ the characters became very popular with US viewers.

BTW, the sketches were done on the fly with little or no scripting, and Moranis and Thomas improvising right off the top of their heads. And it's my opinion the all-time classic had to be "How To Get The Mouse In The Beer Bottle".
