DYN: Marge's Bruce Wayne comment was totally wrong

She said something like "It's like Bruce Wayne inviting his mother into the bat cave". Unfortunately, Bruce Wayne's mom is dead. Was it intentional or not, who knows.

It was one of the "charmingly stupid" comments made by Marge. I bet when the Superman Movie debuts next year, Marge will be saying "Superman's favortie flavor of Jello is Kryptonite!".

Actually, I have a theory on that.   My mother would always refer to STAR
WARS as "that Space Battles movie."    My aunt would always refer to
Dungeons and Dragons as "What's that game you kids play?  Mazes and
monsters?"

In both cases, I don't think it's a true unfamiliarity with the jargon, it's a forced distancing.

In other words, if they called these things by the correct terminology, it would imply Too Much Knowledge. As in, "Gosh, you're *REALLY* into this, aren't you?"

so, by using a close approximation, it's sort of a pre-emptive anti-Nerd tactic.

"I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around a city, keeping its speed over 50, and if its speed changed, it would explode! I think it was called, 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.'"

Marge said the "bat CLUB". Not "batCAVE". And all of you overlooked that?

I have noticed as I approach the big four oh, I am introducing more and more of these types of things into my communication, particularly with the college-age set. In most cases, though, it is not intentional. Man, if I had a teen aged kid, they would be rolling their eyes all the time...

* Comparing Bart's treehouse to the Batcave is funny. * picturing Bruce Wayne's mother, if she was alive, visiting the batcave, is funny. * But since Bruce Wayne's mother isn't alive, Marge's attempt to be hip with her son's lingo is shown to be quaintly off-kilter, daddy-o.
