This may be a really dumb question but is the story of the Island based on any book or other movie or was it an original idea from the writers.... just curious cause it looks like it would be an interesting read... also a little strange for a Simpsons episode... and of course that white orb showing up another time ... killing Hans Moleman

Hans Moleman wasn't killed, he was just detained by it.
The references to the island are from a 60's TV show called "The Prisoner" where Patrick McGoohan is trapped on an island for "knowing too much". He is frequently druggedespecially when he tries to escape.

The title of this very episode is a reference to a Disney movie starrring Kurt Russell from about 1971.
The island bit is straight out of the old tv series The Prisoner. Everything that comes to mind on the island in the episode is directly related to things that happened in the show; someone gassed and taken to The Island, trying to escape, the orb, the numbers rather than names, the room for the interogation. Doesn't Homer escape and then ends up back at the island, with the rest of the family? I seem to recall Patrick McGoohan escaping and getting back to London, only to end up back at The Island, in one episode.
