Yes I post at the top. That way people can choose to read only the new message rather than the drivel that has come before it.

Well it's standard practice on usenet to post to the bottom. I'm not sure why but it is...and it's best and courteous for all to practice the same standard to avoid confusion when reading posts. If some people post to the top and others post to the bottom then the replies are not sequential and it is difficult in posts with parts of multiple messages to tell who is replying to what and in what order everything was posted.

Well, that makes more sense now.

Generally people on newsgroups follow certain threads. So more likely than not they will already know what's been talked about. If they are confused they can just scroll down, rather than having no choice about scrolling.

hint: not everyone is logged into newsgroups about things they are interested in from birth. are you implying that only people who started the thread have a right to debate it, that people coming across it in the middle aren't allowed to know what's going on?

Of course not. But it is much more convenient for the people who are debating to see the newest post at the top. Those who missed a few and want the whole story can scroll down or find the original unexpurgated post.

I just think it's time for old rules to change.

Yes, but when people like you don't follow the accepted convention of bottom posting when they do decide to scroll whichever way to look at what was previously said they can't tell what was a reply to what because top posters like you cause the replies to be all mixed up. If you would like everyone to start top posting because you think it is better that is fine, but you better have a well funded campaign. But until the general convention changes to top posting then it would be courteous for all to follow the same convention, which as of now is posting to the bottom.
