Poindexter

Ok stupid Brit question.

Why does Homer call people poindexter if he thinks them stupid? Is there a particular Poindexter who really was stupid?

I think he's being ironic. The namesake of our clich� Poindexter was apparently very intelligent, and now the title can refer either to a like mind (another smart person, usually nerdy with stereotypical "nerd attire") or an idiot, most often a person who thinks he or she is smart but is not really. The funny thing about Homer's use of the word is that he generally uses it inappropriately, including poking his fat finger into the person's chest and knocking off their nerd spectacles.

He calls them Poindexter if they are nerds. I don't know if this is the chicken or the egg, but there was a Uber-nerd on "Felix the Cat*" named Poindexter. He was the Professor's kid assistant. "Well, gee...Mr....Felix"

that's such a classic line. sometimes i use it on my cats. yeah, they don't understand what i'm saying, but when they play fight (which they do a *lot*), and one gets the upper hand (usually the dumber one), i encourage the other one to "stick up for yourself, poindexter." so many classic lines from that ep. "give me one of those *porno* magazines ..." "this baby's sure to kill something ..." etc.

Would I be right in saying that Dexters Lab-o-ra-tory is a semi spinoff of felix the cat? I mean, Dexter is short of Poindexter, and theyre both wacky scientists and they both talk the same way.

I could be wrong about this, but at least where I'm from and when I grew up, poindexter was something you called a nerdy person...milhouse is a poindexter. So when homer calls someone poindexter when they do something stupid he is being sarcastic.

One of the characters in the 'revenge of the nerds' -movies is called Pointdexter something, maybe he's referring to him? i don't really know..
