Al Jean must have a thing for consistency, because this has been the most consistent season since the Al Jean/Mike Reiss era. However, while those seasons were consistently great, this season has been consistently mediocre. There haven't been any outrageously horrible episodes like "Kill The Alligator and Run" or "The Frying Game," but there hasn't been anything to write home about either. This episode continues that trend. The plot wasn't all over the place and ridiculous but it didn't warm the heart or make a great point either. The humor wasn't ridiculously over the top and slapsticky but there wasn't really much great satire or memorable lines/jokes either. And the characters acted like themselves, but probably too much so, because it seems as if the writers have run out of ways to make these characters funny (the Rainier Wolfcastle interview and the Lenny/Carl lines are good examples of this). And also, there's been WAY too much recycling this season. This episode alone had the "Eye On Springfield" opening montage and an appearance by Ruth Powers...I'm sorry Mr. Jean but recycling elements from old episodes does not help to bring the show back to its former glory. The ending was kind of a cop-out too. This episode had a few memorable jokes and moments but overall, like the other episodes this season, it is not one that will stick in my mind, in either a good or bad way. C+

I'm responding to my own post, but I will add, I did like the Tetris parody, and that has a lot to do with why I gave this episode a C+ instead of a C. Also, I think that while overall there has been improvement since the Scully era, this season just isn't as great as it's cracked up to be. These episodes just lack something.

It was interesting (well, yes) to compare the animation styles of the older seasons and the newer, digitally-colored seasons in this montage.

That was, yes. Because she had a reason to beat up the mugger with the Goofy hat. There was psychology behind it, something that was absent from the entire third act.

I can buy Marge becoming a fitness freak and even visiting Muscle Beach (which has apparently moved to Springfield now), but there's never been anything in Marge's character that suggests that she would move beyond that into the realm of steroids, competitive bodybuilding, and roid rage.

The timing on the bar fight sequence was horrible too. There was like ten seconds of nothing happening, then Marge decides to pick Lenny up over her head. Why? Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Other people have said this reminds them of "Platoon." Maybe this is some sort of direct parody of one of those scenes, which would account for the long shot of the destroyed bar.

No way, one bad act is not enough to drag it down. You always look at the good more and the Godfather and Twilight Zone nods, plus the Tetris scene and Ralph's booger line made this an easy B. It was nowhere near a D which is reserved for episodes like the trips to Florida which isn't as bad as the rare F's like Africa and Brazil. Which all make tonight's episode look like Mr. Plow.

Its sad that so many people who think they know all miss the intelligence seen in almost every scene ever shown on the simpsons on at least some level. Even if you think somethings stupid, its more likely a satire of something that actually is stupid.

We don't want Soap Operas, it's not as dramatic as you think it is. I'm a hardcore fan, who appreciated Season 13. It didn't have drama or human/caring elements, but it had great comedy and satire. This episode just SUCKED! I rarely use terms like SUCKED! But that episode was the SUCKIEST SUCK THAT EVER SUCKED!
