Seriously though, just imagine turning on the TV one day and finding someone has named a cartoon character after you? This poor guy must have had to put up with idiots saying 'D'oh!' every time he passed them in the street...

Of course they did an episode covering this, where a TV detective was given Homer's name.

And that's the end of that...

But, the use of "Homer" to indicate someone of lesser intelligence didn't come with The Simpsons. I suddenly can't think of an example, but the image that the name "Homer" invokes is more like the slack-jawed yokel on the show.

I suspect it's because the name "Homer" was common in rural areas, specifically "hillbilly" type areas, so the name was used to suggest that sort of person, and to suggest the stereotype of people who lived there.

So I suspect "HOmer" was given his name (besides Groenig's father having the name), to invoke that sort of stereotype, with the result being it just makes it worse.

One famous "Homer" is Homer Hickam who was born in West Virginia and his father worked at a mine. He wrote a book, it was turned into that movie "October Sky", about him and his friends playing with rockets as teenagers.

I'd agree with that (indeed 'Cletus' has the same connotations) but in this case, the obit was for someone with the name 'Homer Simpson' and I'm guessing there wouldn't be too many people around with that exact name

Here in Australia Nissan put out a light truck (with a van variation) called 'The Homer', back in the mid 1970s. I've only ever seen one on the road, but it is about the size of a Toyota Dyna, or maybe a Canyonera...

Another famous "Homer" is Homer. He wrote two books, and one was turned into that movie about that city called Troy, but I can't seem to remember the name of the movie. In this movie a bunch of guys played with swords, shields, spears, bows and arrows, horses (real and wooden), and some wooden sailing ships.

Many historians, by the way, believe that Homer didn't "write" anything. He sang his epics instead. He was possibly illiterate and the majority of his "readers" were definitely illiterate.

But besides, Grampa seems to be one of those Age Shifters.

One minute he's young enough to have a young child at Woodstock, the next he's about the same age as Monty Burns in WWII (nevermind that old Monty was considerably older in other episodes). In another, he seems to be young enough to remember being a fan of Buck McCoy while he was a child, yet now Buck seems to alternate between Abe's age and something older.
