Heh, I had that same thought last week when I though about the way this episode seemed so rushed in terms of trying to get most of whatever plot they could peel off into a half-hour episode, and the way it would end with the remaning kids and Borgnine being stuck in an abandoned summer campground, thus given us the cliché ending. Somehow I wonder if they've lost their parents back during the Deliverance parody earlier in this episode! They just never wanted to explain it anyway.

This was one necessarily one of my favoriate episodes though, as I felt the writing was rather forced and from then on, many episodes started to get rather complexed and distorted in their way. As many fans would contest, it seems in the last half-dozen seasons it's gotten rather monotomus over how the producers felt it was easier to pad episodes around guest stars that would be plucked for a particular episode and to expand further with whatever boundaries they haven't crossed in favor of doing stories that would take on personal or social situations that used to happen in the earlier seasons. More of just playing your characters for whatever you want to do rather than explore their abilities, characteristics or what-not.

I personally miss Lewis and Richard in the earlier seasons, though they hardly had any personalities or voices, it did give Bart more people to rally for than just Milhouse. Comes off too much like Peanuts with Shermy, Patty, Violet and Frieda, and you'd rarely see them after the first couple decades, then lose interest in it alltogether.

Listening to the DVD commentaries, it's funny they haven't done a whole episode based on previously-drawn animation they could overdub to make a fairly new episode. I'd do it deliberately to ruin the show just to end it quicker!

Man, they could've cut everything but the knife-related jokes ("Don't do what Donny Don't does"!) and I'd still have 15-20 good laughs! Add a dying seagull, peanut sweepings, floor pie and "the yarrgh-est river-goin' boat there be" and you have a winner.----
