Just in case anyone is interested, after seeing the monorail episode of The Simpsons for 100th or more time, there is a piece in the December Atlantic Monthly about the monorail in Las Vegas. But it goes into what defines a monorail, and how monorails may be constricted by the notion that they are a transport of the future, when we became that future quite some time ago.

That's easy! "Mono" means "one" and "rail" means "rail".
'Course, I had to take an intensive, six-week course to learn that.
But, that was the point made in the article. Various cities claim monorails that don't actually fit the description. They all want to be part of that wave of the future, but they don't actually get what makes a monorail a monorail.
