A small note of historical value here, "The Ride of the Valkyries" did not originate with "Apocalypse Now". Coppola borrowed it from Richard Wagner. The Ride of the Valkyries" (German: Walk�renritt), is the popular term for the beginning of Act III of Die Walk�re by Richard Wagner. composed during the 1850's and first performed in public in 1870. Along with being perfect for the scene I assume it's public domain by now, thus no royalties.

I remember years ago someone telling me that "Also Sprach Zarathustra", by Richard Strauss, was written for that movie about that space odyssey that took place in 2001, but I can't seem to remember the name of the movie. I convinced him otherwise. The fact that he did no the real name of the music should have clued him in that it was not written just for the movie.

But surely using it with helicopters derives from "Apocalypse Now". Indeed, it's been used before on The Simpsons, in fact a previous Treehouse. The bit where Homer gets a "magic" hammock that clones him, and there are all those clones in the wilderness. When the helicopters appear with the giant donuts to lure the Homers, the same music is used.

I suppose next you'll be telling me Wagner also wrote the music traditionally used at weddings when the bride walks down the aisle (commonly, but incorrectly, called "Here Comes the Bride", although I've never heard of anything close to a complete set of English lyrics using those words), and not only that, but it was written not for a wedding, but a wedding night. Not familiar with Lehengrin that I know of (although I'd probably recognize the piece if it's used as widely as you say).

At first I thought you were talking about Mendelsohn's "Wedding March" from his "Midsummer Night's Dream", used for the wedding of Titania & Oberon, the queen & king of the fairies; but this is used mostly as a recessional.
