One of the treats that viewers got in the early seasons were Simpsons versions of historical events. Not downright obvious parodies like we get in the current seasons, like bible stories, tall tales, fairy tales, Harry Potter, and Behind the Music. Two excellent episodes, in this regard, were Homer's Barbershop Quartet (retelling the Beatles) and Homer vs the 18th Amendment (retelling of the 18th amendment). Homer's Barbershop Quartet was an amusing story of the group's rise to fame, even if you didn't know all about The Beatles' history. After reading about it, I found the episode to have so many hidden parallels. (Moe's Cavern-The Cavern Club, replacing Pete Best with Ringo Starr - replacing Wiggum with Barney, Barney and his Japanese girlfriend - Lennon and Yoko Ono, both groups giving a final impromptu performance, and lots of other things). Homer vs the 18th Amendment is a fun episode on it's own, because it satirizes the town's obsession with alcohol. But the episode is even more satirical because it had parallels to the actual prohibition of alcohol in the early 20th century: speakeasies, poor law enforcement, jazz, the mafia.
These are just 2 episodes, but I'm sure there's many others from the earlier seasons. Can anyone think of any others?
