Wonderfully written. I love the rising tension, the drama, and Burns is at his wicked best. Many of the other regular characters put in a fine performance, too - including Homer, of course. "My, that's the loudest profanity I've ever heard!" : Ned.
My personal favorite part is the end, with Dr. Hibbert pointing (ostensibly to the viewer) saying, "I sure can't solve this. Can you?" I still remember being suckered by that one the first time I saw it. Classic.

The only thing that ruins this one for me is the rakes. The joke goes on far too long. Strangely enough, this is the one time that a syndiation cut helps. It cuts out just after the shot of the field of rakes is shown. It works better that way.
I take it you're a Gilbert and SUllivan fan? I'm a member of the G*S Society of Nova Scotia and we're doing "The Gondoliers" in May!

'Homer's Barbershop Quartet' is the one I always think back to as a golden episode. I love the Beatles references ('Bart Of War' was a good episode for Beatles fans too), but the story itself is neat and the jokes are great. I often dig the ones that flash back in Springfield history. I haven't seen it in a while, so they'd better hurry up with the DVDs and get to Season 5.
If I had to pick two, I'd choose 'The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson' too, so it seems the Homer-centric episodes are for me often the greatest.
My favorite of all time is:
Homer's Phobia [4F11] from Season 8.
First Bart's lottery with the dryer, then Homer not noticing John's shirt, then the dancing, the Steel Mill, the reindeer...
So many laughs....
