The still of Homer jumping a shark refers to the term "jumping the shark". Named after a moment in the later seasons of Happy Days, in which the Fonz jumped over a shark, jumping the shark refers to the point in a TV show's run in which the program begins to suck. A web site called www.jumpedtheshark.com provides fans a voice as to when a certain show began to become awful. Currently, the site has the Simpsons listed as "never jumped", although some people in this newsgroup may disagree.

First of all, this roast is, more or less, along the lines of a Dean Martin roast -- in a scene where Bart & Lisa gave their testimonial, they were reading off a teleprompter. In actuality, the Dean Martin roasts were a largely-scripted affair, as the stars' testimonials and one-liners were written in advance (I think Don Rickles ad-libbed his).

Second of all, Homer was roasted at a Friar's Club roast. The Friars Club, of course, did hold roasts, which pre-dated Dean Martin's.

And now for something completely different -- in this episode, there was a scene where Dr. Hibbert laughed, Nelson said "Ha Ha!", and Mr. Burns said, "Excellent". A few minutes later, this scene was repeated again. This was probably, more or less, a clip from the same clip show.
