It's odd that Springfield is somehow a diverse town yet there are no Muslims in it. And it's also interesting how the writers focus on religion often yet never seem to talk about Islam. What are they afraid of?

It's a segment from Jake Tapper at ABC news about some of the changes the Arabic-version Simpson's was going to go through. I didn't think of it before, but they'd probably have to lose Santa's Little Helper, too. Nope, it doesn't. And I have a real respect for those (European) papers that re-printed those cartoons AFTER the rioting began. Some criticized them for needlessly provoking people. I think they were showing solidarity with their fellow publishers, not bowing to the pressure of the mob.
Now, as to your somewhat leading question - you raise a good point, in all seriousness. Introducing a muslim character now would just seem inorganic, and the handling of that character would have to be done carefully. That is to say, not funny or entertaining.
But "The Simpsons" has been on TV for 17 years. Surely in that time they could have introduced a muslim. Maybe one of Lisa's teachers, a cab driver (the comedic possibilities!), or mechanic...
Anybody remember throw-away characters thay *may* have been muslim? Princess Jasmine?
If Springfield can have stereotypes like an Indian running a convenience store, and-a Luigi a-talking with-a the fractured English, why not have a gas station run by an Arab? Other stereotypes on the show include include: snpp is run by a Yalie-snob, the comic book store is run by a sexually frustrated fat guy, the workers at the plant are all lazy good-ol' boys, the professor has thick glasses and bad teeth, Akira, the guys at the Mr. Sparkle factory, "Happy Smile Super Challenge Family Wish Show!", etc., etc. Stereotypes everywhere. They even had a bowling team called the stereotypes!

I don't know if you guys got this in us, but a german cartoonist made a far better one for a news segment on the Soccer World Championship, because the organizers are afraid of terror acts...
it shows the german military as the german soccer team and suicide bombers as an arab soccer team - satirizing the paranoia in germany of course..but he was smart enough not to give in to blackmail (http://www.tagesspiegel.de/wochenbilder/karikaturen/karikaturen%202006/060210_Bundeswehr_stutt.gif) Translation: Why the military has to... ...secure the soccer championship
actually, i guess it's far worse, not just for fundamentalistic groups but for eg. politicians as well, if a caricature is published in a newspaper than appearing in a comedy show...at least i would make that difference
i mean that mohammed-cartoon was a satire on a prophet, i'd bet the church would react the same way if it was the pope ^^
but no new roles in the simpsons, but maybe Roy could have converted to islam in his absence?

Which, to be serious for a moment, is a prime example of why this whole 'Muslim outrage' thing is so ridiculous. A woman had her 8-week-old baby snatched by a wild dog and presumably killed and eaten. She was subsequently jailed for murder on botched forensic evidence, later pardoned and compensated, but only after her husband divorced her and her other children refused to have anything to do with her again. And this is a subject for humour? Of course not (although Australians are the worst offenders here!)
Now if that had been a Muslim baby snatched from the Sahara desert, and anyone dared to make a joke about it, there would be hell to pay.
Just making a point... No way could any TV programme make any kind of fun out of a Muslim character. They wouldn't risk it.
