The Springfield state flag

In the episode were Bart and Lisa try to design the state flag someone makes the comment that Springfield is a northern state. They've never been so specific before and they basically eliminated Springfield, Louisiana.

I KNOW of course that Springfield isn't really anywhere, but Matt Groening's hometown of Springfield, OR fits all those criteria.

Wouldn't work. Springfield, Illinois is that state's capitol city. And we all know that the capitol city of the state wherein the Simpsons live is...Capitol City. I don't think that there's any REAL US state which has been precluded as the the home of the Simpsons. Unless you focus in on North Tacoma.

I always thought it was very clever how they muddied that up - there was that one episode where Skinner says, "This was once the worst school in (wherever)...... before they picked it up and moved it to this state"... That was a nice one. How about the episode where they attempt to change the phone number area codes??? Do those two codes point to anywhere???

In Behind The Laughter the final line was that they are a North Kentucky family. however two observations on that.

1) The premise of the episode is that the simpsons show is made by a real family, and is a fictionalised version of themselves. We know that the "real" simpsons live in North Kentucky, but still don't know where the "fictional" ones live, and its the "fictional" ones we've been atching all this time.

2) I got the impresion that 'North Kentucky' is the made up name of a fictional state. It's not that they live in the northern part of the state of Kentucky, its that they live in the state of North Kentucky.

No they got way more specific on "Kill the Alligator and Run" (BABF16) when, in the very last scene, there's a big easel with a map of the US on it and every state has an "X" on it except Florida, Arizona and North Dakota. Those are all states the Simpsons have been banned from. So of course Florida gets crossed off, Homer doesn't like Arizona cause it smells and so all that is left to visit is North Dakota. That means they aren't in _any_ of these states.
