I always thought it was because he was simply too lazy to fight the crowds. Easier to have somebody carry him out. (Yes, I know that's a sentence fragment.)

Also, did he give Homer an explanation? Something like, "See, the thing about that is.... Yaahhhhh!" <runs away>
