That is the beauty of the show. They never really tell you where Springfield is. It is a running joke on the show. They drop hints sometimes but the hints contradict each other. They have had episodes where just outside the city is desert so you would think they lived in the southwest somewhere. They also have have episodes with snow so they cannot be in the southwest. They have a stereotypical redneck named Cletus like in the south but they also have stereotypical italian-american mobsters like Fat Tony that live in New York or New Jersey. Springfield is anywhere they need it to be in American.
