(Speaking of Grammer, how soon before this year's "spinoff of a long-running comedy series", "Joey", pulls an "AfterMASH"/"A Different World" and falls through the floor ratingswise when people realize that the other stars of the spun-off series aren't going to show up on a regualr basis? True, I know "Frasier" won four or five straight Emmys withouth having any "Cheers" characters, but it didn't hurt that most of the show's fans were too busy waiting for Niles & Daphne to do something that they didn't notice.)

"A Different World" was a successful spinoff which lasted 6 seasons. Plenty of spinoffs do ("The Jeffersons" being the biggest example). In fact, the spinoffs you mention failed because they were too closely identified with their mother sitcoms. "The Ropers" were just not as funny without Jack, Janet and Chrissy.

"Joey" is probably DOA, simply because the show will always be unfavorable compared to "Friends".

What about the great Simpsons spin-off, "Chief Wiggum, P.I."?
