It's just common etiquette.
OTOH, as you correctly pointed out, it is also common etiquette *not* to quote an entire post, just to reply with one sentence or such. If it's a long post you're replying to (I'll leave the definition of 'long' to someone else), you should quote only the parts you're replying to, unless other paragraphs are needed to understand the context.
That's a minority opinion! :-)

Yeah, I thought it was appropriate too. Especially since the number of circles called, the number of times Harry said "Blessed Be", the references to The Goddesses and the high doctrine of Karma that I witnessed in Harry Potter sure doesn't ascribe to stereotypes of witchcraft.
BTW, have you heard Dead Alewives' Dungeons and Dragons clip? You might find it poignant or something.
