Continuity Problem in Blunder Years

In "The Way We Was," Homer plans to apply for a job at the newly built power plant after high school--so how was it already operational when he was 12?

History in the Simpsons varies due to the charectors never aging.

I also noticed that right away.

There were some other continuity problems in this episode with characters ages- like why was Moe around the same age as Homer, Lenny and Carl.

And why was Smithers a baby when his father died if Homer was 12 years old when the corpse was freshly discovered? I always thought that Smithers was about the same age as Homer. According to the 138th Episode Spectacular he is "in his early 40s"
