REVIEW: B-minus - for an episode that looked like it was going to go in a number of different directions, it certainly managed to go nowhere quite well. Just when I thought it had a chance to redeem itself with its ending when Nelson's father showed up (and I'll give Vitti credit for not going with the obvious "make Nelson choose between his father and his mother" storyline), the episode just ends leaving everybody hanging - I agree with Homer that it needed a little more closure.

GOOFS / FREEZE FRAME / WHATNOT When Matt Groening draws Homer, his ear looks like a G; however, whenever someone else does it, it looks like a T with rounded lines inside of a C.

Grampa has never had a "Simpson Butt". (Homer probably got it from his mother.)

It is revealed that Nelson's father went out for a pack of cigarettes when he left his family, but in at least one other episode, Nelson claimed that he went out for something else.

Kaypro computers date back to the mid-1980s; they were marketed as an alternative to the Apple II. One of their features was "built-in disk drives and green-screen monitor for under $1600".

When he started to sing, I immediately though "a song from Tommy" but then as he continues something about it made me think it had to be some other song.

Now, I've not gotten the album out, and I don't have the episode handy, so I have nothing but such vague thoughts.

In "A Milhouse Divided," Nelson tells Milhouse that his dad left his mom when she became addicted to cough drops. In "Bart Starr," though, we see Mr. Muntz show up to take Nelson home after a football game. I'm guessing the cigarette thing happened after this, and the Muntzes have broken up and reconciled more than once.

I hated that scene ... Nelson singing ... eeew.

But, I very much liked how they explained his father's disappearance ... a mental Muntz running amok through the street spewing gibberish ... a classic! It's an obvious reference to Elephant Man.
