The NEW Simpsons might be funny, but it is NOT the Simpsons. It has become an ordinary cartoon show that relies on sight gags and slutty sex talk.
The "weirdness" is forced. The gags are forced. The IQ of this show is about 50 or so. It plays to the lowest common denominator. And, frankly, the new emphasis on sex and sleazy talk is just plain disgusting.
Things that used to be hinted at are now thrown at us like a medicine ball. The old (and I mean several seasons ago) Simpsons knew the value of understatement, of insider jokes and references, of sly winks and shared innuendo. The new writers and producers know nothing of that. They have set out to make the Simpsons just as crass and offensive as Family Guy and South Park. And, in doing so, are destroying and rewriting the canon of the show. Like making Lenny and Carl overtly gay. Now, where is the comic value of that, except for some pathetic future screen shots where they play up the gay factor? The subtle hints of it that were present all during the shows run were always there to be played on. And, WHY is there suddenly so much gay in the Simpsons? Is Al Jean gay? It sure seems like somebody is trying to whomp us over the head with it suddenly.
Oh well, all things must end. The "new" Simpsons might be funny, and may even be a hit. But it is NOT the Simpsons. It is the same characters playing new roles. And, I won't be watching it any more.
