So now i am to understand that barney is sober,

has a dog, and owns a blowing ale and coffee shop?

I mean there is comedy here... but what gives?

no coffee shop, no bowling ale. he makes his living sucking coins out of the love-tester machine. and i hardly think that he hangs around moe's sucking coins out of the love-tester machine and remains sober.

Yes, Barney's uncle owns the bowling alley. Homer worked there for a short period, and actually Barney was fired to make room for Homer.
