And while we're on this subject, who here agrees that "Homer vs. Dignity" was one of the absolute worst episodes ever. This episode sits with "A Tale Of Two Springfields", "Simpson Safari", "The Great Money Caper", and "Kill The Alligator And Run" in the Simpsons Hall Of Horrors. Everything about this one was completely atrocious, from Homer getting molested by a panda to Mr. Burns throwing fish guts into a crowd of people. Who was the fool that made Mike Scully executive producer, anyway? After watching the above mentioned episodes, you'll need to get out your Season 2 DVD set and watch "Lisa's Substitute" and "Dead Putting Society" to wash them out of your head.

There's a big difference of opinion here. I will agree that "Homer vs. Dignity" was probably one of the worst things I've ever seen. I've only watched it once; Homer gets raped by a panda; I'm never watching it again. Fine, that's one thing, and, yes, I'll let that one incident ruin the episode for me, but the episode in summation was a lot better than some of the stuff the Mike Scully era cranked during its middle years.

In all fairness, "Simpson Safari" was *funny*. The story sucked big time, but the individual jokes held up like an Act One that filled the whole episode. "The Great Money Caper" was whimsical, but not bad--definitely an episode I'll watch the whole way through if it's on. "Kill the Alligator and Run" is another case of 'horrible story, fantastic jokes' and runs the same kind of gamut as "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes"--episodes so jam-packed with quality material that they actually work (and hold up after twenty airings).

Don't get me wrong--I think the Mike Scully era was the worst in the series, but that's only aggregately. Maybe ten episodes I'd call true classics, out of, what, eighty or ninety? But compare some of Mike Scully's worst episodes to the worst ones from the latest Al Jean turn. I'm actually shocked at how badly "Three Gays of the Condo," "Brake My Wife, Please," "The Regina Monologues," "The Way We Weren't," "Bart-Mangled Banner," "Sleeping With The Enemy" and "She Used To Be My Girl" came out; I don't think I laughed out loud once at *any* of them. Fine, you don't get the callousness of Mike Scully's worst decisions like Jerkass Homer or the death of Maude Flanders, but I'm not entirely convinced that that's better when we're getting Kim Catrall as Marge's best friend--I'm sorry, am I supposed to be laughing, or have the slightest idea who that is?

Mike Scully gets a really bad rap for having been the showrunner when the series lost its trademark literary edge, and some of that rap is well-earned. But per capita I'm willing to bet that his turn as executive producer gave us more 'original' plots than Jean's latest has. Jean came back after how many years and his first produced story brought back the Vegas wives; three episodes later, he approves "Half-Decent Proposal," essentially an entire episode built around a single joke from "The Front" a decade earlier. Season Sixteen has been a dry spell thussofar. At least Scully made it look like he was trying.

And for the record, I think "Lisa's Substitute" is a bit overrated. Funny, but not hilarious. Poignancy is fine, but when an episode is that slow paced, it's distracting, IMO. I've never been all that amused by "Dead Putting Society," either; I actually think it's one of the worst episodes from that era.

As I was saying, "Homer vs. Dignity" is one of those episodes that I can't stand to watch. Whenever it comes on, I quickly turn the TV off. I would also like to point out some things I forgot in my earlier post, such as the (IMO) extremely forced voice acting in this and much of Season 11 and 12. The voice actors probably didn't like these episodes any more than we did.
