Okay...let's narrow this down...

Springfield has a beach, since many scenes take place at the beach or the waterfront. This excludes all but the coastal states.

It can't be in the south since they have enough snow to need a snow plow service (Mr. Plow). This also excludes Southern California.

There are huge mountains around and they can be easily seen from the Simpsons house in the episode where Homer climbs the mountain.

So where is there a coastal state with a beach, mountains, and snow in the winter?

They are not in Canada. There are dozens and dozens of reasons why.

Actually, the post I was quoting was not yours, which was an obvious joke (note smiley face symbol). I was in fact quoting a poster who insinuated that they had believed up untill recently that Springfield is Massachussettes, but were now leaning towards Canada. And of course Canada is a complete impossibility, hence came my post.

To throw my two cents worth in... the state they live in also gets hurricanes (the hurricane episode where Ned's house gets detroyed). So that rules our Canada since Canada doesn't get hurricanes that far up north.

The Massacusetts line still holds up based on the above logic... MASS has snow, beaches, mountains (in western MA) and gets hurricanes.

When Calista Flockhart does an Ally McBeal crossover, I'll be convinced. :-)

But honestly, Virginia has all of those things that Massachucetts has too. The point of which state is a moot one, and can be argued to the end of time.

True, however, the time that they went to Ned's beach house (the one with Lisa's yearbook), they went to that LONG indian named town (Little Pamaquanosetport, something like that) and we have many of those types of named towns in Mass and RI. How about in VA?

Get real, you can find something in past Simpsons episodes to rule out EVERY state. The reason is because the Simpson's Springfield isn't IN any state. It's not real. It's just a cartoon. Sheesh, if you were an archeologist, would you be looking for Bedrock (town the Flintstones lived in?)

Exactly. The creators didn't sit down and decide which state Springfield is in and then decide to keep us guessing for years. It's not been decided at all which state it's in. However, Matt Groening did BASE Springfield on a real city in Oregon but that doesn't mean that Springfield is in Oregon or in any other state.

Actually, I went to the U of Oregon my freshman year in Eugene, Oregon which is what the city Shelbyville is based on. The cities are separated literally by a small bridge and it's amazing the rivalry that goes on between the school kids of Eugene and Springfield. The episode "Lemon of Troy" is so dead on.
