Timeline screwy?

Does it make sense that Marge was pregnant with Bart in 1989? Bart was around 10 years old in 1989 right?

Didn't marge also say they have been married for 10 years, that would make them married in 1993.I think that is what I heard. All in all I think it was a funny episode.

Well you don't want to rush into it. Once Maggie ages, she can't go back. Or, she can't go back without lots of comments about continuity errors.

While on one hand it would be interesting to see her at a more mature age, her role is pretty significant as it is. Sort of as an observer who sees more than people give her credit.

What hasn't happened is that she hasn't had much adventure off by herself recently. The one where she's with the bears, the time Marge is at the spa and Maggie wanders off in search of mom, and the daycare episode. These were all big roles for her, and were neat because they don't actually happen to someone her age.

Agreed. I would like to see teenaged Bart and Lisa, too, and unless they start aging the kids a bit (which I don't think would necessarily be such a bad idea), then a flash-foward is the only way we're going to get that.

don't ask me how i know this, but nickelodeon has spawned a spin-off of rugrats where the kids are teenagers. it's rather disturbing, but... *trails off*

People are misunderstanding my point, I know age wise the Simpsons are frozen since they started in 1989, but that would mean Marge was pregnant with Bart in 1979 and so the 1989 Rolling Stones tour shirt Homer said was from when they were dating is not plausible, either a test or a snafu on the writers part.

I believe one of the earliest episodes showed Homer and Marge at their high-school prom in 1974. But the timeline has generally been sliding forward, since the family doesn't age. But what's really interesting is that in last year's "Half-Decent Proposal", Artie Ziff recreated the prom for Marge, and it was a 1970s-eras prom, very similar to the one we saw in the early episode. So the timeline only slides forward when it's convenient. I figured they'd start getting into trouble with flashbacks sooner or later.

If time wasn't standing still since the show began in 1990, Bart would be 23, Lisa would be 21 and Maggie would be 14.

It means that the creators are given some artistic license and some leeway regarding timelines. Check out the commentary of season 1/2, the writers are aware of the issue.
