I am unable to get subtitles on anything on Disc 1 of season 5. When I press the subtitle button, it says that option isn't available. I haven't had the problem yet with Disc 2 (haven't checked Discs 3 and 4).
Is this a universal problem, or should I return my set?

About halfway through the set, I realized what was causing the subtitle problem. Any episode with deleted scenes does not have subtitles available. I'd like to have subtitles as an option, but I'd prefer deleted scenes. It's a small price to pay in my opinion.

Yeah - they are handy sometimes for that elusive line that is spoken too softly and/or too quickly. I've sometimes missed what has been said, only to rewing it over and over, not being able to understand something. Put the subtitles on and gone "Aaaah ok".
I can't think of an example off the top of my head but it has happened. Ant\yway my point being, subtitles are handy.
Anyway, there should be no excuse for not having them. Oh, so there's deleted scenes? So friggin what? Why does that stop them subtitling it? That's the lamest excuse I've heard for ages.

What were the deleted scenes in "Treehouse of Horror IV"? I figured they would include things like the pizza gags and the "I.O.U. One Brain, Signed God" gags from "The Devil and Homer Simpson", but I didn't see them. (Maybe they're not available with the commentary track on?)

I haven't watxhed the DVD'x I've gotten thuxxofar, but if Matt'x introduxion ix any indicaxion, the xcenex from 3F31 are included in the "deleted" xection of the xet.

In any case, you should be able to turn on the subtitles. They're in the menu system, but a little hard to find at first, if you only want to change the subtitles. Go to language options and select your language, then it brings up the subtitle menu. (Usually there's a choice to go straight to subtitles, even though it does seem redundant...at least you know they're there.) Alternately, while playing the episode, choose the subtitle menu, if you have this capability (in WinDVD, I can right-click and the "Menu" item lists whatever is available: title menu, root menu, chapter, audio, subtitles); or if you like, start playing an episode with no deleted scenes, choose your subtitles, and you're set for the duration of your session (this won't work on disc 1, as they all have them, and it's also kind of stupid).
is there anyway to watch the deleted scenes by themselves without having to watch the whole episode?
Apparently not. It's bloody annoying.
