Geez, what a stinker. First there was the "Homer does something, that somehow everybody sees, and then he makes a job of it" plot which is a very tired device. This could be forgiven if it had led to some good jokes, unfortunately, they were few and far apart. The victory dances that are made for the players were pretty damn boring. The football player cooking the ball <yawn>? The only really good joke was from the Donkey Kong remake between Homer and Mario.
(Note to writers: if you have to have a guest star's name on the back of their shirt, they're probably not of guest star status)
Of course, this episode will be remembered for the now infamous "my name is Jeff Albertson". Ugh. You know when there's a mystery in a book or a movie or a tv show and someone says "it's better that they didn't tell the audience" (think briefcase in "Pulp Fiction")? This is one of those cases. Besides shock-value, what purpose was there to revealing CBG's name? It wasn't even done in a funny way.
Finally, there's Ned's subplot about making overly-violent religious films based on a strict interpretation of the Old Testament. This storyline had some great potential, but was pretty much destroyed by way too much gratuitous violence (not that I'm against gratuitous violence, just in this case it didn't even make me chuckle). When Simpson writers put their political/religious views above comedy, it's never good.
Overall: D+, pretty crappy effort.
Next week: Bart becomes a hip-hop star with special guest 50 Cent. Don't be suprised if you don't see a review from me next week.
