6/7 - How the Test Was Won (LABF02) Bart does so well on a practice version of a nationwide achievement test (or so he's told) that he is excused from taking the actual test and is instead sent to a party (but didn't Bart learn anything about free gifts in "Whacking Day"?); Lisa is so rattled by "only" scoring 96% on the practice test tha she questions her own confidence when the real thing comes along; Homer forgets to mail his insurance payment and has to spend the entire day preventing accidents

EMMY RULES CHANGE: Starting this year, the Voiceover Performance Emmy will be treated as a "normal category", with five nominees and one winner (unless there is a tie). Also note that because of this, the voiceover winner will not be announced before the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony.

The other big rules change for 2009: there will be six nominations in the Comedy and Drama Series categories, as well as the Lead and Supporting Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series and in a Drama Series categories; however, the "semi-final round" (where 10 semi-finalists in each category are named and a panel chooses the five nominees) has been removed. Also, there is no more separate category for variety show performers; instead, "stars" of variety series or specials are nominated as part of the show in the Variety Series or Variety Special categories (while, in a rule implemented last year, "cast members" of variety shows like SNL compete in the Comedy Series Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress categories). Reportedly, this rule was added to make it easier for talk show hosts to win an Emmy, as almost invariably somebody who hosted a one-off special would win under the old rules.

(Oh, and the Academy has made it quite clear that "game show hosts" are eligible for the Reality Show Host category, so don't whine if Howie Mandel or Regis Philbin get nominated while Cat Deeley does not.)

I don't know whether to consider this a goof, or what, but it's odd that the barley contamination scandal was never connected to beer. There are some beers that don't contain barley, but you'd figure that a lot of beer would be affected, yet we see Homer drinking a Duff after the scandal broke. Maybe that contributed to Moe's decision to start serving ONLY Aquavit and no beer?

But surely it depends on what kind of contamination. Moldy grain was a source of early hallucinations, so if it was contaminated that way, it might make the beer better. At the time, they didn't know what was going on, and maybe blamed it on witchery. But later, it was understood. LSD derives from a fungus growing on Rye.
