It's derived from the Monty Python TV "Spam" sketch, set in a restaurant where Spam is the only item on the menu. It ends with the "Spam Song," which is just "Spam, spam, spam, spam" over and over.
I'm pretty sure it's an acronym. Can't remember what the S and P stand for , but A and M are for Advertisement and Mail.

No, Spam is the Cadillac of processed meat products: It's just ham and pork shoulder (and a lot of fat). If you want snouts and entrails, you have to go to the head cheese or potted meat food product.

We must also remember that spam is no longer just spiced pork.
There's also my favorite, turkey SPAM. Plus, I believe the correct term is potted meat, not processed.

Nope, potted meat is.... something... different from Spam, or Treet (fake Spam), or other Hormel canned meat products.
Potted meat is... well. We don't know. We don't want to know. Frankly its a product we can do without.

That must be an urban lenn...urban legend, I mean, then. Because I've heard a couple times that SPAM was derivative of specially prepared assorted meats.
if I wasn't so lazy I'd go look it up on snopes2.com or something.

No, really. That's not to say you can't get the rest of the pig if you want -- like I said, head cheese and potted meat food product can contain snouts, hearts, etc. If glands are more your thing, try Mexican chorizo sausage.

In the 1890's Chicago hog butchers came up with a way of utilizing discarded parts. The foodstuff was to be marketed as "Savory Pig Anuses in Mucus", but newspapers objected to the term "pig".
=v= More to the point, during the skit a group of vikings would starting singing the song loudly, intruding on and drowning out a conversation that was taking place. It is the intrusive nature of bulk/ad messages that inspired the name "spam."
=v= If an acronym was coined, it was long after the term "spam" was put to use, especially if the M is for "mail."
=v= Spam was originally something that happened to newsgroups.
It was years before email was afflicted with it, and in fact
people would snicker at "newbies" who referred to unsolicited
bulk/ad email as spam. Eventually unsolicted bulk/ad email
became the biggest problem by far, and now everyone
uses the word to mean that. .-.
