Turned "record" back on for this episode. Missed it anyway.

Lately I had been so disappointed in recent episodes that I stopped recording them. However, I decided to give them another chance and turned record back on. What I got was the end of a football game.

I'm nearing 40 years old and if I had a nickel for every show I wanted to see that got pre-empted by a football game, I'd have a bunch of nickels. Why do people watch football anyway? I've tried getting into it, but it moves so slowly I feel like I'd have to anesthetize 99% of my brain to keep from going loony with boredom. I am sure that's why alcohol goes so well with football. In fact, I don't think anyone really LIKES to watch football--it's just an excuse to drink.

What? No joke... Rugby is much better then football. It's similar to football, but without the crappy girly stuff, like padding and helmets.

"Yeah, I was in the scrum one day, and the ref couldn't see the bottom of the pileup, so I kicked the the guy on the other team in the shins a few time." (A quote from a Rugby playing friend of mine)

Football is a gentlemans game played by blaggards, and rugby is a blaggards game played by gentleman.

And American Football is a game played by big nancy-boys wrapped in cotton wool.

Whoops, I was thinking of non-American football, what we call soccer. What is Rugby? I think I knew at one time but I forgot.

Sounds only slightly less boring than American football. I guess from the way you describe it, you only need to be blind drunk and a little sadistic to enjoy Rugby, while you have to be blind drunk and masochistic to enjoy watching American football.

No, American football is boring because it's slow and played by a bunch of girls. I saw a friend of mine tear a sleeve off this rugby jersey one day (Anyone who's ever played rugby, and owned a real rugby jersey, knows first how tough these damned things are, and second, how hard it is to tear them). This was as he was literally dragging three other guys down the field, hanging off this back... the weight of the fourth tore the shirt.

I think the only negative part of rugby is the lack of cheerleaders.

Sounds like almost as much fun as watching a dog take a shit. I revise my description: You have to be blind drunk, sadistic and mentally retarded to enjoy rugby. Thanks for the info!

Not nearly as big of hits in rugby as in football, thus the padding. Rugby's a bunch of grabbing, poking, and cheap shots.

Rugby is like keep away. You know that we all played in grade school. I love these people who think that football is a pansy sport because pads are worn. I've watched plenty of rugby and soccer and I never see the hits I see in football. I'd love to see one of the rugby tough guys play line for a football team. I'm sure it would be a real laugh riot.

Women's rugby is great. Especially in the rain...

As to playing football, my other friend (See my post about the torn jersey somewhere) is 6'2. Though I haven't seen him weighed, as the scale didn't go up high enough (Only went up to 280), his biceps are as big around as my leg.

OK, so I'm a part of the minority here. I love football, I played on both sides of the line- Offensive Center/ Guard & Defensive Tackle. Football is a sport of communication and togetherness. If your team isn't working together you don't go too far. Hence the Chargers stopping at 8-8 after starting out 6-2. Unlike, what it seems to me, with the likes of soccer, basketball and such...

On a side note. Rugby players make awesome football players. Well, at least punters. Has anyone heard of Darren Bennett of the San Diego Chargers? Yeah, I know. The who???

He's a former rugby player turned punter. It started back in '94. Darren was in San Diego in January for the Punt, Pass & Kick competition held before the '94 Super Bowl. He won the kicking part of the comp. I forget the actual distance he kicked the ball, but it was phenomenal for NFL standards. For the most part, it was because the football we use is like 5-10lbs lighter than a rugbyball. Or something like that?

So an official from the Chargers Org. came to him and asked if he would like to try out for the team. It's been 7 wonderful years of near perfect pooch punts.

Because of Bennett's style of punting, he drops the nose of the ball which entails a backspin on it when it hits the ground. Instead of the ball flying into then out of the endzone, it cuts back into the playing field where it gets downed for bad field position for the opposing team. It's truly amazing to watch. Because of him, more teams are trying the pooch punt like Bennett does...

And I would think that Simpson fans would, at least, have a somewhat curiosity about the sport Homer J. loves so much... Whatever?

GO BOLTS!!!

Well, sorry for misleading everybody with that last response of mine. I had the details of the situation wrong, but they were close. Oh well...

Just in case anyone wants some more info. Yeah, right? If you don't want to navigate through the Chargers website at www.chargers.com here's a direct link to Bennett's page...

Hope that worked...

Damn, friggin', stupid machine. Sometimes I hate the simplicity of my webtv unit...

Football Sucks!

Global often puts less Simpsons during the week-end just to have more football, especially in January.
