Ah, the most dreaded of all shows: The clip show. These things are always poison. And as far as clip shows go, this one was particularly bad, as neither the clips or the original content was very funny. I was really puzzled over the selection of some of the clips; in fact, the clip from Mountain of Madness was cut off before the punchline, which was particularly confusing. That song at the end was pretty good, though. Perhaps the inclusion of a picture of Homer "jumping the shark" means that even the producers admit that the Simpsons is well past its prime. Oh well, at least it wasn't as bad as "All Singing, All Dancing." That's something, I guess. (C-)

No show has ever gotten more mileage out of recognizing and making fun of the fact that it's running on empty. The fact that they're out of ideas IS the punchline to nearly every one-liner anymore.

Every episode of "The Simpsons" has become one big meta-reference to the show itself. Which is why a clips show is even more redundant than usual.

I think they should make another clip show with the pieces of episode that were cut in syndication.

Yama, who thinks cutting in syndication is anathema and no longer watches Season 1 episodes on FOX.

It's at least interesting to note that in my absence from this group--I was a regular poster here for about two or three years--the role of the casual Simpsons pseudo-fan has somehow shifted from contrarian drone (CSG fodder) to staff lackey ("If you don't like the show, it's because you don't understand/the writers are making fun of you".) I can't imagine being parodied on the show stings THAT much to make such a dramatic shift.

Anyway, we now return you to your Ralph Wiggum quotes cascade. I'm gonna seek dry land again.

nah, i don't really care enough to check google archives. i just agreed that one way of looking at that last sequence was that they were screwing with the way people perceive the show - not that they haven't done that in the past, of course.
