Dont understand this joke

In "Itchy and Scratchy land" homer is flipping through radio stations but all he picks up are stations talking about "signs of evil". Is this a reference to something? Parody of Religious radio possibly?

there's also a lot of religious stations on shortwave.

yeah the only time i tried to make a shortwave, all i got was like 2 religious stations.

so i didn't end up finnishing it
