For what reasons I can't remember, but the Simpsons all made up fake endings and red herrings to mislead the sweepstakes and compeitions.

Santa's Little Helper was one of them. I think one of the theories was Mr Burns pointed to "S" and "W" on the sundial as he fainted, thus pointing to the killer's initials - in this case it was going to be "Simpson's Mutt" (upside down W). It sounds lame...but it was one of the alternatives.
