Does Anybody mind. . . .

Dear All, Although I've only been joining in with the chat more recently I've been keeping up to date with this NG for a few months now, and I was wondering if I could ask a big favour of everyone.. (and please read this whole message and don't just ignore it as soon as you read the first few words of the next paragraph!)

I've got a dissertation to write which is based on The Simpsons, which is totally cool as it means I get to write about a show I'm a really huge fan of as part of my education!! I'd like to ask you all if anybody would object to me using some of the things we have chatted about on this NG over the last few months, as a lot of the conversations which go on here are really good and really relevant to what I want to say. If you don't want me to use any of the things you've said, or you would like to remain anonymous then could you let me know in the next couple of weeks.

I'll also be discussing Simpsons art work so if anybody has any of their own they'd like to show me then that would be great, or if you have any questions then just get in touch here or via my Email.

I assume from this that you would be quoting from posts that you've saved, which would probably mean that the posters' names are on there as well, so I think the best way to go about it would be to contact the specific people whom you'll be quoting to see if they won't mind it.

I'm not certain what your major is either, but as part of the debriefing (I see you snickering over there, Rack) process in psychology experiments, it's usually a part of the process to tell the participants that if they want to see it, a copy of the results and/or writeup will be made available to them. While what you're doing isn't an experiment, some people might feel more comfortable with it if you make this an option, so they can see exactly how their words are being used, as well as to read a (hopefully well-written, right?) paper on one of their favorite subjects, "The Simpsons."

Ok Everyone I take the point. I will try to contact anyone whom I quote directly, but I just wanted to know if anyone had any serious objections before I start writing. I don't want to get half way through and then find out I'll have to redo it all.

My subject area is Television, more specifically I am writing about Simpsons fan's interaction with each other and the show itself. Something I want to make really clear is that this is not in anyway a psychological analysis of anyone (that's not my area!). I'm writing more about the importance of the fan community and it's activities, and of course if any of you would like to read it that is absolutely fine (although I wont have finished it for another couple of months yet!).

I also want you to know that I consider myself a fan of The Simpsons, I'm just lucky that I can write about something which is part of my life already. Maybe I'm not as big a fan as some of you out there, but I'm a big enough fan to consider it important enough to write an entire dissertation on! So please don't think that I am just doing this as some kind of academic exercise. This is part of it obviously, but it is more important to me than that. To me it is about getting a great show recognised and accepted as important in the academic world. I think OFF is important enough, I hope you do too.

Sorry, I'm going on a bit here. I just don't want you all to get the wrong impression of what I'm doing here. No doubt I'll be in touch with some of you individually, but I'll be around anyway as usual, and feel free to get in touch with me about this if you want.

I never have anything decent to say and I've only been on this NG for perhaps two days, but the 'world needs a clown' and dammit, may my eye sockets boil if it's not my right to make an ass off myself for a dissertation that those who will read l will never meet in real life, in addition to the fact I've never really said anything. Please don't use the term "chat" when talking about this newsgroup. Chats is a place where a message is scrolled out as soon as it's entered, and where nobody discusses what they're supposed to discuss in the particular chatroom.
