Title: "The Squirt and the Whale" is a play on "The Old Man and the Sea"

The Blackboard Gag "SOUTH PARK, WE'D STAND BESIDE YOU IF WE WEREN'T SO SCARED" is a reference to the fact that the Simpsons writers are afraid of the South Park writers, who are all much funnier than they are.

Music: One of the songs heard is "La Mer", which is a song that Rousseau used to sing to her baby Alex, on LOST. The song is about a father clownfish who has LOST his son and searches the ocean looking for him.

Mr. Burns: has three dots on his head.

DYN: Nothing. There was nothing of note in this episode.

It was supposed to be but was painfully not.

I didn't see it as supposed to be funny. The end of the dream was goofy but after the reveal (of the dead whale, not the dream aspect) it felt played straight to me, with silent crying and all (compare Homer's mother when she really died in KABF12 (Mona Leaves-a)). Actually, I wasn't even sure at first if it was dead, or just in bad shape with Lisa upset at her dashed hopes for air-lift.

They may be funnier, but the reference is to the CENSORSHIP that went on with the recent SP episode involving the Muslim prophet Mohammed, and being afraid of the reaction of Muslims to the aired material in an episode.
