I've been away from the ng for a while, but I enjoyed tonight's episode so much I had to pop in and voice my opinion. Obviously if you're familiar with Evita you'll get more out of the episode, but even if you're not, the songs were very well-done and fit quite well (the "Osh Kosh B'Gosh me" line was great!). I probably enjoyed tonight's ep more than any in quite a while ... the Kent Brockman section covering the strike was one continuous laugh. Very well done! I'd recommend watching at least one more time if you didn't enjoy it, as there were many quick jokes that were easy to miss in this episode. I think this is the first ep in a long time that I actually might have missed something funny because I was still laughing from the previous bit (which is very reminiscent of "the good old days").
I completely agree. This was the best episode in a few years and had me laughing quite a bit. Which is why it floored me to come in here and see almost nothing but putdowns.
It's not cool to like the show anymore, which explains much of the negativity re: tonight's ep... Of course, the last ep sucked just because it really sucked. I predict that you won't see many positive reviews on the ng this season, regardless of the quality of the episodes.
I think the people who rag on S13 and S14 are the people who became fans of the Scully-Crazy Simpsons and now the show has toned down a little with the surrealism, these 'fans' are complaining on how it isn't funny, or whatever. Four years ago, the fans of the pre-Scully Simpsons hated the way he was running the show back in S10 & S11 (me) and I think the show, while not better than the first 8 seasons, is better than anything from S10-12.
I was watching The Simpsons on the what was her name, Liv Ulman? show. I was really disappointed when the show got cancelled as it was hillarious. Quite an excellent show.
I think you hit the nail right on the head. If, let's say next week, they showed a new ep of The Simpsons that was packed full of great jokes, wit, timing, great performances, etc. >> they STILL wouldn't like it. It seems to be about inclusion...to be part of a clic that can like/hate the same things. It has nothing to do with the actual show. Whatever.
No matter how "funny" any of the new episodes seem to you newbies, those of us who have watched the show for years see things that we just don't like - like the absence of a plot, for one.
The new episodes seem to be nothing more than unrelated acts of craziness patched together to make a "show."
A lot of us older fans don't like the fact that the writers feel they have to resort to potty humor to be funny.
A lot of us don't like the change in Marge's personality.
Rather than sit here and list dozens of things we don't like, I'll just say that you are just plain wrong.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I've watched every Simpsons episode ever made. And guess what? I really enjoyed last night's episode. How can you say there was no plot last night?? Or are you referring generally to recent seasons? (In which case I maintain that last night's episode was much different - and better - than any "plot-less" episodes you may be referring to.)
Ditto and ditto. And there was never a time when I felt like "The Simpsons" had been absolutely, irredimebly horrible. There have been a few isolated episodes I hated but even they improved on a second viewing. With the constant turnover in writers and producers it'd be impossible for them to maintain the same level of quality for years but they all still continue to do excellent work in being one of the best comedies on tv and making people (at least those who go in without preconceptions, all ready to hate show) laugh and so it's unfortunate that their hard work is met with this garbage just because liking "The Simpsons" is no longer "cool."

So last night's epsiode was good. Does that change the fact that in general over the past 5 seasons, the show has stunk?
And no, I do not join in with those who say they hate the show only because it is "cool" to hate the Simpsons. At my age, I'm way past that. I dislike the show because it's only distantly related to the show I used to love. Same faces, and that's about it.
I think that most people who "hate" the show in recent years (and my distaste goes all the way back to Cape Feare, but that's another story), don't want to "hate" the show. We go into each episode hoping that we'll see something in it that made us like it in the first place.
Even if it does improve, people will still complain unless it retains the style of earlier episodes. Style and quality are different elements, and people seem to confusing the two.
You have that right. I guess if Homer in a tutu and Willie driving a tractor into a swimming pool is what passes for great writing nowadays we are all in trouble. Oh yeah, Bart throws a brick at a window and it bounces off and hits him in the head -- wow, great stuff there.
The show lost it's way back in Season 5 and never really recovered. While I have watched episodes from the last eight or nine years and really enjoyed them, they are the exception more than the rule. Some episodes get better with time and repeated viewings, some are just painful.
I dislike the notion that someone dislikes an episode they dislike it because it's kewl to dislike the Simpsons in general. I disliked Sunday's episode and went in with all the hope that it would have been a great show. When they weren't singing it was a great story. Though most of it had been done before. Homer in a tutu was just not funny. However, I laughed with the bouncing brick hitting Bart.
I ask those of you who declare yourself diehard fans, as I do, dont say "oh, you only dislike it because it's kewl to dislike it" and those who dislike the show dont say "Oh, it was stupid"... give your reasons. And for gods sake people, learn to live with the fact that someone may have found something funny that you did not.
Though it's a cartoon aimed at the 12-22 year olds lets at least act civil. Thank you.

Anyway, I can see in the earlier episodes, (i.e. Season 3), there is alot of hyper-creativity. The episodes are kind of dark, too. I think some people like when cartoons get "nasty"...another example being "Ren & Stimpy". (And I am not referring to the "potty" aspect of that show.) So, the newer eps aren't as dark and hyper-creative...but, they are good in their own unique way. BTW...as the years pass, the "newer" episodes will become old and gain nostalgic value just as the early seasons are to us now. Face it, those old eps are gone.

It wasn't bad, but I think Mike Judge should consider suing for plagiarism. It's rather disheartening that the writers have sunk to copying King of the Hill episodes.
After last season, I figured the Simpsons could run for quite some time. Now I'm not so sure. So far this season just hasn't lived up to the last. I hope the best is yet to come.
