Whichever state Springfield is in, it would have to have a capital called Capitol City. That kinda narrows it down to zero.

Pet theory: Springfield, and the land immediately around it, is actually a giant flying island, like Laputa in Gulliver's Travels. This may expain a few things:-

how the sun can rise and set over any point how Shelbyville can be sometimes adjacent to Springfield, and sometimes miles away how the fair city sees virtually every type of climate, geography, fauna, flora, politics, law and culture the existence of Five Corners (North Takoma (the island-state's official name) simply plonked itself down at Four Corners)

It is powered by a magnetic lodestone under Burns Manor; the same technology is used on individual buildings, hence the appearance and disappearance of the Bush/Ford house etc.

Actually, that still leaves Capitol City. Perhaps that's on another island.

This seems to me to be a joke about the four-color map problem and other related brainteasers...
