Political correctness be damned

I read in the Feb. 15-21, 2003 TV GUIDE that after complaints about Bart's claiming to have Tourette's Syndrome, (Shticks and Stones), the reference in the repeats were changed to "rabies".

Political incorrectness is what makes this show refreshing!

In a time when our own politicians and educators are doing all they can to destroy our first amendment rights, television producers are giving us "reality" shows where the outcome is planned in advance and religious nutcases are demanding that we join their cults or be killed, it's important for the producers of shows like The Simpsons to refuse to pander to pressure groups of any kind!

The producers should NEVER respond to complaints of "inappropriate" material, NEVER change a script under pressure, NEVER allow special interest groups to control the show!

I've never heard any obscenities on the show, and allowing individuals to censor the show to fit their own warped sensibilities, (or their desire to control others' thoughts), further diminishes our freedom.

you are so right! Tourettes syndrome usually isnt bad and the cases are usually very mild but thats besides the point! The Simpsons is not a show for young children anyway and if something like this was presented on South Park people probably wouldnt complain.

No, I just saw the ep a few days ago and the reference was unchanged. Though if it would be changed it might be because most people don't know what Tourette's is or because they cut out the punchline: I remember when the ep was first shown Bart exhibits a demonstration of Tourette's immediately after making the statement ... he says something like "Shove it, witch!" .... a good demonstration of Tourettes ... but in the reruns that line is cut out, leaving Bart's statement about having the syndrome just hanging there without the punchline. Stooopid.

The tourettes line was cut YEARS ago, when PC was in its heyday.

It all started when some kid with Tourettes went on "A Current Affair" and said he was going to sue the Simpsons because of that joke. FOX apologized to the kid and changed the line to "rabies". But the twitchy little bastard then demanded that an episode be made in which Bart befriends a kid with Tourettes. By that time, tick-boy's 15 minutes were up and he was deservedly forgotten.
