depends what season. I'd choose a Simpsons season 4-8 over family guy anyday, but currently, Family guy is my preference.

Family Guy, Brian and Stew are great

Whats sad is that the two shows are so much alike nowadays. I never really liked Family guy even if i'de laugh at it. its all cheap laughs, no substance and about a subtle as a sledgehammer

I miss "old school" Simpsons :(

Family guy sucks because there are so many unjustified gags, such as people shaking their heads in a courtroom, followed by the girl from the Excorcist rotating her head and puking. Also too many flashbacks, cheap crap that children like. W.R.

I love Family Guy, they are really ahead of the game as far as pop culture reference goes. They had Osama Bin Ladin on 2 years ago for instance. You must respect without Simpsons there would be no Family Guy but along with South Park those are my favorite shows on TV, I dont need reality-i have enough that around me!

Nowadays, Family Guy, but overall The Simpsons is better by far.

The thing is, there's just more substance in The Simpsons, and the characters have more than one dimension.

For example, after Marge acts in A Streetcar Named Desire, she and Homer embrace outside and even though they're cartoons you know that they love each other. Homer is a flaming jackass but there's always that moment where we see the good in him. We'd never see that with Peter and Lois because Peter is a flaming jackass all the time. You can't see any real character to him because he's just a moron for the whole episode. But I'm rambling so I'll shut up.

Point is, they're both good in their own little way, but I prefer The Simpsons by far because there's more to it than just a bunch of gags tied together loosely by a plot.

Family Guy right now... only because the Simpsons of the past few seasons have sucked royal behind. I beg to differ on the "appealing to children" bit. I think very few children, save those who watch old Sci-Fi channel re-runs, would understand Stewie's "sad walking away song from the Incredible Hulk." I think Stewie is a lame gimmick character, but that was kind of obscurely funny.

Stewie may be a gimmick character but he is usually hilarious. I will never get over him saying in the christmas episode, "If this santa is so omnipotent he should have the testicular fortitude to show himself" Or something like that. Testicular fortitude is my new favorite phrase.
