This might be off topic a bit, but I'm looking at new TV sets, since the one I have is an old pathetic Toshiba 21" that looks lost in the big new entertainment center cabinet I got.

(Although I guess a 21" screen was good enough for Homer: "That piece of junk? No way! We're gonna get a new TV. Twenty-one inch screen, realistic flesh tones, and a little cart so we can wheel it into the dining room on holidays.")

Anyway, something on the order of 27" to 36" is what I'm looking at. Those flat-screen HDTV-compatible ones are awesome (although Sony Wegas don't impress me; too much separation between the horizontal scan lines for me -- I can see black lines in-between the scan lines). I'd also like to be able to play widescreen movies without the letterboxing effect looking too blatant with huge black borders on top and bottom.

Any suggestions for enjoying the Simpsons to their fullest? :)

The only way to minimize the black bars is to get a 16:9 (widescreen) TV, and even then, only 1.78:1 material will be free of black bars. Anything less will have bars on the sides and anything less will have black bars on the top and bottom. ________________________________________________________________

Yeah....I know the black bars will always be there. But on some standard TVs, they are *really* there. Maybe it's just a perception sort of thing rather than actual reality if you measured the width of them. But on some TVs it just seems like the letterboxing effect is more pronounced.

Actually, it's not the TV, it's the movie. Movies are filmed at different ratios, and this is why some times the bars are bigger than others. A 2.35:1 has more pronounced black bars than a 1.85:1 movie. A lot of the more serious or artsy movies are filmed at 2.35 to give moviegoers a more immersing experience. Unfortunatley, watching these movies on a 25" TV sucks.
