A Simpson's Centric Interpretation of Realtiy, Courtesy of the Yahoo! Daily Crossword

A recent Yahoo! crossword puzzle had "The letter 'H', to Homer." as a clue. Of course I was thinking of the OFF Homer, and I was stumped. The answer was "eta", which is the transliteration of the name for the Greek letter "H". The clue referred to "Homer", the philosopher from ancient Greece, of course. I am so trapped in the popular culture of the last few decades that all I could think of was Homer Jay Simpson.

The only thing the two Homers have in common is that they are both bald. And, people suspect that both of them could be gay.

Homer was not a philosopher, he is the mithical-probably-never-existed writer of the Odissey and the Iliade (I don't know the English title, I'm Italian)...

Yesterday's Yahoo! crossword puzzle had the clue: "H, to Hippocrates". Since there are no cartoon characters named Hippocrates on Fox TV, I easily answered this one. "Eta" was the answer.

Well, if I'm not wrong they kept almost the same meaning, but since I had heard the quote only in Italian, it didn't immediatly flash out to my mind when you mentioned it (ok I write in English, but I still think in Italian) ,that's what I meant when I wrote "I only watched it in Italian". I don't remember anything about this Luigi stuff...

The Odyssey and the Iliad. Of course, as a Cambridge don (I don't know who) once remarked, the Iliad wasn't written by Homer, but by someone else of the same name. Homer's an ancient verb meaning something along the lines of 'to compose verse', which is why it's probably not the author's real name.
