Bennett Serf was a publisher at Random House, as well as a regular panelist on What's My Line.

In the states of Illinois (am I right?) and Maryland, all scheduled executions have been suspended. The reason: both states are conducting studies about those who are sentenced to death, specifically their race, as some people claim that the death penalty sentence is racist towards black.

I only saw the second half of the episode since I forgot it was on early to make room for the series finale (thank God!) of "The X-Files" (the truth is not out there), and immediately came to the same conclusion as you regarding the ending. The episode you cite is "The Great Money Caper", IIRC. However, at least there was a real (if lousy) explanation this time.

Nitpick: It's Bennett Cerf, I believe.

Mr Burns has called him "Lenard" in previous episodes, so maybe Homer doesn't know his first name and was just guessing.

Anyone pick up the comment at the end about doing lousy shows just for the ratings .... ?

Wiggum asking "Where's that robot?" is apparently a reference to the Negotiabot from Brawl in the Family.

True in Maryland, but in Illinois they were suspended simply because so many death row prisoners turned out to be innocent.
