there seems to be two reasons of thought around here: the current episodes (seasons 10+) are not as good as the early seasons (1-3), and vice versa. i think i speak for pretty much everyone when i say that seasons 5-8 (approximately) were the golden age (feel free to disagree, but that's not my main point ...)

to the people that think the early shows are worse than the recent shows: this comparison isn't really valid. when the simpsons premired, they didn't exactly have much money or even a precedent to follow. how many (successful) prime-time cartoons were there before OFF? 1? if that? how many people at the time expected the show to survive? so, naturally, characters are being defined, stories are tried out, and it's expected that certain things will work, others won't. as a result, these shows have less of a cookie-cutter feel to them.

yes, bart was the focus of the show at the time. and, considering the circumstances, it worked very well. the focus shifted to homer at the right time ... it didn't really need to happen any sooner or later than it did. certain stories did have morals to them, but, for the most part, they were well enough hidden that they didn't stand out.

when comparing episodes, therfore, give the older ones a handicap. it's *expected* that the newer shows will be better than the old ones ... if someone says, "the older shows weren't drawn as well, the characters weren't as funny, the stories weren't as interesting ... ," i for one still find these "unrefined" characters and plots better than the current situation, but even if *you* don't, it's still difficult to argue against the old episodes. the foundation has to lie somewhere.

besides, the characters on the older episodes had more of a human feel to them, even more than some of the golden age ones do.

Excellent post! I agree with your evaluation of when the golden age was, totally. Most of my favorite episodes are from that era, "Bart of Darkness", "Homer Goes to College", "The Springfield Connection", "Radioactive Man", "Lisa the Vegetarian", "A Fish Called Selma", "King-Size Homer", "You Only Move Twice", and on and on. I think season 7 alone, was the best season.

yep, season 7 was magnificent. perfect balance between all 4 main family members, razor sharp satire, flawless writing and lots of emotion.

I absolutely agree. Its also interesting that Season 7 returned to a more serious, dark, emotional, and character-driven style after the more plot-driven Seasons 5 and 6.

Season 7 is a season that shows IMO a good evolution of the original concept.

The writers united the old depth and class of the first years with more surreal plot ideas and references (e.g. the Film Noir atmosphere in "Bart Sells His Soul") and they united real satire and social commentary with emotion and character relation. The show had new and fresh (and even more radical) elements and ideas but the old spirit was still there.

Was this group extant when Season 7 was shown? If so, what was the general opinion on it then? Not that I disagree with your assessment, but my experience of other fandoms is that a 'classic age' is rarely appreciated when new, and wondered if that was also the case here.

indeed it was -

24/3/96 -

"I would nominate the episode of 3-24-1996 (Troy marries Selma/Patty) as the very worst episode in the history of The Simpsons. This is the beginning of the end for the show, I would say. Today shall live in infamy."

6/10/96 -

"Anyway, here's *my* list of the worst episodes:

Bart vs. Australia Fear Of Flying Homer The Great Homer vs. Patty & Selma Lisa The Iconoclast Much Apu About Nothing Two Bad Neighbors Two Dozen And One Greyhounds

And these get a dishonorable mention:

And Maggie Makes Three Bart's Comet Homer: Bad Man Homie The Clown The PTA Disbands"

sheesh....

actually i remember seeing a post from 1991, posted after Bart The Daredevil aired, which said the simpsons was getting stale and that it should be cancelled!

I agree, excellent, well reasoned post. Its refreshing to hear a new intelligent viewpoint.

In my humble opinion, I dont think the recent series' are all that bad. Theyve certainly grown on me after a few viewings.

The writers set one hell of a precedent after series' 4-8(approx) so its no surprise that they havent/will never meet those standards again.

whoever would say that (I don't know anyone who likes the new ones better then the old ones) is a real dumbass

Weebil28STONECOLDFAN2311

That would be another thing that i wonder about. Why is someone a dumbass simply because they might not agree with your opinion?
