Hi everyone,
Earlier this week, Fox 11 in LA showed episode 5F21, The Wizard Of Evergreen Terrace. In the scene when Homer and Bart go to the Edison Museum, there's a sign outside that says "Edison Museum - No Gang Colors". It cracks me up because it's so unexpected...so unexpected that I think it might be a reference to something that wasn't mentioned in the capsule. So, does anyone know if it is a reference or an inside joke of some sort?

one perspective might be that the joke is (of course) a commentary on the rules in american society specifically created to deal with the problems that clothes create. what i'm basing this on is one of the school districts around here for example (middle school thru high school). first you couldn't wear backpacks anymore, then you couldn't wear marilyn manson tshirts, then you couldn't wear baseball caps or bandanas, then anything at all having to do with (or *suspected* of having something to do with) satanism, wicka, witchcraft, etc., which meant if someone didn't like the particular black tshirt you were wearing, well, then you had to change. i've never lived in an area with *real gang problems, so i don't know what's going on in other areas of the country, with certain colors not being allowed because they're affiliated with gangs, or at least certain articles of clothing like bandanas, hats, jerseys, etc., of a specific color being banned to prevent problems. around here it's more of a control thing, but i've been out of school since the shootings began so i don't really know *what* the mentality is. the joke in the simpsons may have something to do with this. it's funny cause why would anyone involved in a gang go to a museum about edison? but on the other hand, it's not so funny, cause in real life museums get fieldtrips from schools and in some places that sort of restriction may be necessary for security's sake and once again the simpsons has hit real life on the nose. what society is and where it's going. and in a different, darker, tingly way it is funny, horribly funny if you know what i mean.
this is just one way i think about this joke. not that it's right or wrong, or even what i believe is going on. just a possibility. yeah, and explaining humor often makes it lose its lustre, but i've got little else to do.
