Who's in charge?

How or Who decides the schedule of syndicated episodes? Is it the local stations? Is there a "master" rotating schedule that they have to air them in? It sure does seem we never get to see earlier episodes.

Here in Los Angeles, The Simpsons are played three times a day. 6pm, 7:30pm, and 11pm. Now I don't know all the episode numbers, nor do I feel inclined to look them up. But a short description should pinpoint which episode. Here are tonights offerings...

6:00pm - "Half Decent Proposal", Marge's wealthy ex-boyfriend offers Home $1 million to borrow her for a weekend. 7:30pm - "Simpsons Tall Tales", The Simpsons play folk legends like Paul Bunyan and Tom Sawyer. 11:00pm - "Krusty Gets Cancelled", Cancellation sends Krust into a tailspin.

Which Simpsons are playing in your area tonight?

Usually, earlier episodes aren't shown because a station doesn't own them...you have to own the rights to an episode to play it...so is it more feasible to own all or a few? Think about it...all syndication contracts run for a year with about 4-5 airings allowed per episode...
