Tonight's episode was bad. Really bad. First and foremost, the attempted satire and social commentary _bombed_. It didn't suffer from the same irrelevance that "Marge vs. SSCCaTaG"'s message did, but every attempt at some intelligent content seemed either A) too rehashed (e.g. Apu's partriotic transformation), B) too easy and obvious (e.g. Government Knows Best Act), C) too dumbed down (e.g. The rehabilitation video) or D) too wacky (e.g. the entire third act). And boy, was it ever disjointed: I still can't make the connection between Bart's deafness and how it was the cause of him mooning the flag. He wasn't blind, guys. Humor also failed, with a few laughs scattered throughout. I don't see much funny about insane needle jabbing Hibbert, Muppet suicide or poor OFF characterizations. Homer was the oversimplified idiotic caricature of himself that I thought I'd never have to see again; Marge was showing signs of her crazy Scully-era self; Lisa was all over the place, with flaky morals and changing opinions on everything for the sake of a joke. Bart was decent, but that wasn't enough. And the song was awful, coupled with cringe-worthy dancing. A few decent moments save this episode from complete crapulence, but it's still the worst of the season, with a 6/10. (D/D-)
Alcatraz, also known as the Rock, is a now closed maximum-security prison located on an island in the San Francisco Bay, in Northern California. Originally, Alcatraz was founded as a military fort in 1850, but it was transformed into a federal prison on January 1, 1934. During the twenty-nine years it was as fully functional penitentiary, Alcatraz was home to such notable prisoners as notorious mobster Al Capone, and Robert Franklin Stroud, better known as the Birdman of Alcatraz. It was shut down in 1963, due to the fact that the expenses required to maintain it were three times that of other prisons at the time.
With tonight's episode, OFF joins the ranks of thirty-four other people who ever dared to attempt escape from Alcatraz, and the five that actually did make it off, though they're all presumed drowned. The main obstacle that prevented the prisoners from swimming across is the cold temperature of the waters of the San Francisco Bay (averaging from 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit). However, it isn't so improbable that OFF made it that far alive. Prior to the prison's 1934 opening, a teenage girl swam to the island to prove that it was, indeed, possible. In addition, fitness guru Jack LaLanne (who guest starred in AABF16) towed a rowboat to the island. And recently, two 10-year-old children made the trip to the Rock by swimming, so Bart and Lisa making it isn't that odd at all.
(OFF appears on a white screen, dancing in star-spangled sweat suits (and Maggie's dressed as Lady Liberty)) Singers: It's a Yankee-doodle Simpsons! Yankee doodle do or� (A shot of Homer from 8F24 is seen) Homer: D'oh! (Bart is then seen in a basketball uniform in the school gym, with a carrot in his back pocket.) Announcer: When Bart has an all American wardrobe malfunction � (A donkey comes up and takes the carrot, eating Bart's shorts off as well. An American flag unfurls behind him, as Martin comes up and takes a picture for the Daily Fourth Gradian. The picture makes it seem like Bart mooned the flag purposely. Cut to Skinner, Krabappel and Chalmers watching the events from a distance, on horseback.) Bart: Uh-oh. Edna K.: Bart's mooning the flag! Crowd: Boooo! (The crowd tosses thing at him, as a newspaper spins up, with a caricature of Bart smiling evilly and showing his butt to a disgusted Statue of Liberty, reading: "Scandal". ) Announcer: � The Simpsons are convicted of treason and sent to Alcatraz. (Cut to a scene of OFF in church, praying, whilst a SWAT team aims firearms at their heads. Cut to OFF sitting in prison, looking sad. Cut to OFF, in their all American attire, coming from a tunnel at the base of Alcatraz to find themselves surrounded by water. The camera zooms out so the whole island can be seen.) Homer: D'oh! What genius put a prison on the middle of an island? (They dive into the water and begin to swim.) Announcer: Will they ever see freedom again? Lisa: Swim towards San Fransico!
