At exactly what episode did The Simpsons stop using generic "background" characters and used "only" characters with story lines? You know what I mean.

When did they stop keeping track of what time it was, and just leave the clock on the wall in the kitchen at 9:15? Without even telling us if it was a.m. or p.m.?
When did they stop making the oil stain on the driveway larger or smaller, as real ones change size when it rains, snows, etc. and just kept it the same size all the time?
When did they go from being cheap yellow trash to being cheap honky flesh tone trash?

But they've never stopped using generic background characters, really. What about just last season, where Homer designed the Superbowl half time show? The writers didn't fill the stadium with third teir personalities from Springfield.

It would have been nice if the Mamas had one or two more familiar faces, but on the whole I'm glad the producers aren't exclusively using people who have a backstory. It looks weird if the same hundred or so people in Springfield are the ones who show up for *every* event.
