Agreed, this was a great episode, with the exception of that stupid Ghostbusters thing. Anyone notice who got the writing credit? (I missed the beginning.)
Agreed, great episode and the Ghostbusters ending (and Homer's dancing) had me laughing for the 1st 5 minutes of Malcom in the Middle and that NEVER happens. "Is that a story about that minivan I rented?" Sincerely, Little Girl
It was a good episode. I normally do not like the episodes when the characters do not play their normal roles, but this time they did it right. Much better than "Simpsons Bible Stories" and "Simpsons Tall Tales".
The second story was the least good and the third story was the best, IMO.
They ruined the ending though. It's the "The Great Money Caper" type of ending. That didn't ruin the entire episode, but the ending is too important to do something like that.
I don't like episodes like this and the Simpson Tall Tales and Bible Stories, but I laughed quite a few times. I was very disappointed at first- I did not laugh once during the "Homer's The Oddysey" sequence, but I was lol all the time during the hilarious Joan of Ark and Hamlet sketch.
Favorite Jokes (nothing from the oddysey): Joan and her "imagninary friend" "Give God your dessert" Joan stabbing the friendly guard Hamlet's father and his "double-stating" Hamlet's unsubtle guilt-tripping Attention-wanting Sister Ophelia Curtain Hiding Wiggum Practice Stab Queen Marge's death
Well I thought the Patty/Selma thing was so funny because the Sirens are supposed to be so beautiful and seductive that no man can resist their charms. Patty and Selma are what we in the industry term "exact opposites".
Also, I thought to myself as I heard the singing, "who would be the last characters on the Simpsons that I would expect to be cast in the part of the Sirens?". Being right made it more funny for me.
Maybe I'm over-explaining. Perhaps you knew this before and still don't find it funny. Everyone's different.
You know, I have to watch it again tonight to provide more examples on what it was that kept me laughing so hard through that entire segment. I will get back to this thread tonight or tomorrow...
yeah, i thought the sirens part was hilarious as well. and the fact that patty and selma have such scruffy voices in "real life" (i.e. what we know of them usually in the series) is yet another thing (which you hinted at in your post) that made it funny for me. the sirens have such intoxicating, enchanting voices and singing and you're right - who would be the last characters to be cast as such? of course P & S.
i also found quimby, barney and (woah, brain fart) captain mccallister (is that his name????) as the gods on mount olympus very funny. good to see barney intoxicated again throwing lightning bolts around haphazardly ("you blew up atlantis!") and that sea captian cloud blowing the ship around "har, har, har" - man that was funny!
and the pigs that looked like lenny & the rest of the gang - lol!
You didn't find Joan's "imaginary friend" joke funny? That was probably the first time I laughed out loud during the episode. I probably didn't react to the River Styx joke as much because I already laughed at it during the commercial.
Ah well, people find different things funny. I didn't find the Atlantis joke funny.

Yeah, me too. I watched it again last night (twice) and still found it very funny.
After seeing the river Styx again, with the skeleton sitting on the shoulders of another skeleton and lifting it's shirt; plus all the skeletons holding up lighters; and more skeletons head bobbing to the beat, I can honestly say that's the best quick scene on the show in the last few seasons (IMO, of course).
This cracked me up. The second Lisa appeared I thought "Oh, she'll have to go crazy somehow." She does, in spades, then I wondered how they could work a drowning into the segment. I didn't have long to wait.
I'm not flaming, I'm just curious. Have you ever read the Odyssey? If you haven't, that might explain why you didn't find it very funny. You really have to get the refs. If you have read it, then you just didn't find it funny I guess...more power to you.
That is probably why. I have not read The Oddysey, but I have read and watched the movie (Ingrid Bergman) about Joan of Ark and watched Hamlet countless of times.
