There were more gay references in this than any other episode?
The conversation between Ned and the Sea Captain. The movie ("My Best Friends Gay Baby"). Sara Sloane tells Ned he is good looking, a moustache and he is not gay. Moe will report that Sara will engage in girl on girl action (the all woman's book club). The All Male, All Nude XXX ad on the side of the bus.
Any other episode with more references?

I'm tired of gay references in the Simpsons. Smithers' homosexuality is no longer interesting because the wiriters have made gay jokes about pretty much every other character. So are we to assume that the sea captain is gay (or at least bi) now? Who the hell cares.
If the Simpson writers couldnt use gay or pot jokes anymore and had to refrain from serious violence, I think they'd have a hard time writing new shows.
I would have to say the Sea Captain is so lonely, he would take anything he could get his hooks on.

Yeah, really, I liked that it was just Smithers who had the gay innuendos. Even his were getting a little too blatant, such as his cringing at the strip club. Are we going to see Burns catching him making out with some dude in his office next? Is a coming out episode inevitable?

I don't think he was in for this angle, but that epsiode also had a reference to Bob Balaban. Something like the move star(let) saying "It even makes me forget Bob Balaban" or something like that, and Ned says that's what Maude use to say.
At first, I didn't get that reference, but assume it's because Bob Balaban is all over the place, and that it would take a lot to forget him.
But, he was in Midnight Cowboy, as a young client of Jon Voight. I have to assume it's the teenager, who then doesn't pay and Jon Voight either hits him and/or takes his watch.
And that is a reference to gay sex.
